Your Place in the UNI-verse – Write 31:Day 20

centerclick on this picture to download your pdf.

Make God the Center of your world, and you will have everything you will ever nee. {Matthew 6:33}

Life is busy.

It was created that way.

Grass is busy growing.

Birds are busy gathering.

People are busy changing.

Creation was always meant to proceed in a forward motion. The universe expands at an alarming rate if you really think about it.  Almost 42 miles per second from what I understand.

But are we growing and changing in the right direction?

If you consider the word universe, you see that uni -meaning having or consisting of one, and is followed by verse -which is “writing arranged with a metrical rhythm, typically having a rhyme”.  There is a rhythm to life, a verse that is repeated consistently around the One that put it all into motion. Whether we recognize it or not, everything we do each day: wake, sleep, eat, breathe, create -were all set into motion at creation. And everything in between that occurs throughout our days are just variations on those actions. We are all moving around a center, both universal and personal

We go about our days rhythmically patterning around that center.

Wider and wider the universe expands with each passing day – the Creator at its CENTER. That is what holds it all together – the Source of creation.

If you really think about it, our own lives expand in a similar fashion – growing, learning, and expanding our knowledge and our reach, around the CENTER of which we originated. Like the universe, we began somewhere – there was a Source, and it is what feeds everything we do. Recognizing that Source and clinging to its power is what keeps us centered and moving in that forward motion.

Have you ever had one of those days where you felt disconnected? When every step you took felt as though you were observing life from a remote place, distant and detached? To me, those times can be very perplexing, and when they occurred, I often wondered what I was missing. What could have knocked me off my axis?

I haven’t had one of those “out-of-body” experiences in years, and I firmly believe that it is because I have found my center – the thing that I move purposely around. The epicenter that keeps me grounded to my days and allows me to grow in the right direction.

Without that grounding I am like a free floating projection, shooting off into space without restraint. I know that sounds like freedom – free floating like that, but like those disconnected days, it is terribly disconcerting. If you can find your CENTER and move purposely around it, everything else will fall into place, grounded and purposeful.

God is that CENTER

He is the Creator of the universe and the Creator of you. He is what gives your life rhythm and purpose. Make Him the Center of each and every day, and the patterns that emerge will be will be beautiful, and your growth exponential.

Are you growing from your center with purpose, or have your days become free-floating? Re-connect to the true CENTER and find your ground.

Concerning Epic Failure – Write 31:Day 19

graceclick here to download pdf of this picture

GRACE means that even when we fail, we are accepted by God. His love for us won’t allow anything less. It is all you need. When you are weak – He is strong. {2 Corinthians 12:9}

Graceful I am not.

Yet as I pirouetted on the stair to set the baby gate in place before continuing down, my socks slid out from under me. And I couldn’t help but admire the beauty of which my feet hung suspended in the air, before plummeting down the remainder in a final bloody heap. You know the moment – the one that seems to go on forever as you anticipate what comes next. Arms flailing in windmills around your sides, like some cartoon character from the 70’s in an effort to keep the inevitable from becoming reality.

Epic failure

Somedays I can’t even walk without failing. This reality hits me like a ton of bricks (or a hardwood floor as the case may be) and takes all the air from my lungs. As I struggle to breathe, sucking at the floating molecules that surround me, my mind floats through ways I could have and should have avoided this situation.

Anger is a part of it:

If I didn’t have to….

If it weren’t for….

Blame peppers my thoughts, and then my lungs expand to take in the life-giving substance that has been eluding my grasp. I look up into the faces above me, concern etched on the face of my family, and feel wet slide across my cheeks from none other than the two culprits of my demise.

And all of the anger and blame fades

Their genuine love and concern for me has melted my resolve and instead I embrace their offerings of apology and extend a bit of grace.

The way I see it, this is an illustration of the beauty of God’s GRACE for his children.

We fail epically

Our failure causes anger in a righteous God

We offer our sincere regret and love

God’s grace flows like a river

Many would like me to say that He doesn’t even get angry, that grace comes before the apology, but isn’t He a righteous God?  Isn’t our all too human behavior what keeps us separated? Yes, His grace abounds – but isn’t an action required here?  Even if it is simply to say I’m sorry?

I often struggle with the topic of grace

The dictionary in my NIV says that it is “God’s free unmerited favor for sinful humanity”. Free – hmmm. But isn’t there a line there somewhere?  If we could keep doing whatever we like without feeling disfavor, without ever having to say “I’m sorry”, why would we work toward being better?

Maybe I just don’t understand how loving God really is.

I know that his love is unconditional, but I also know that He wants us to be restored, to live righteously and to become the holy people He needs us to be. How do we do that if we never feel displeasure? If it were that easy, there wouldn’t be a narrow path. It would be wide and everyone would be doing it.

But they aren’t

God’s grace is beautiful. It is our strength when we are weak, our hand-up when we fail, and our HOPE when we just can’t see any. I think God loves so much that He sits suspended above  looking for a way to change the inevitable. He knows we’re going down, and He knows why. But He also sees the beauty of our struggle and knows that without grace, that beauty will become just another statistic in a long list of them.

So I choose grace. To receive. To give. To embrace as I fall – like the lifeline that it is.

TRUST – Write 31:Day 7

trust

“Trust is knowing that no matter what we see before us, the path is sure and leads to God’s side. He is faithful.” {2 Corinthians 5:7}

I have trust issues

Most people probably do

It only takes one or two bad experiences to cause a callous to form in any given area. I remember when my daughter was only four, we had a wood stove in our house as the central source of heat in winter. I constantly worried and fretted over the possibility of burns. At four years old, children are immensely curious and want to touch everything. I followed her around everywhere redirecting her attention to other things when she appeared to be entirely too interested in the stove.

Despite all my efforts, one day she grabbed hold of the door while I was stuffing more wood inside. Let’s just say, she never touched it again. It was just a quick touch so the burn wasn’t too severe, but it definitely left a mark on her hand -and her heart.  She learned that trusting her own desires would fail, but that trusting her parent’s love for her was fail proof.

The years that followed that incident unfortunately brought with it more choices, more experiences, more hurts – more callouses. The troubles she endured, both deserved and unmerited, changed her. Each hurtful word rubbing a tender portion of her heart until a thick skin formed. Unfulfilled desires hardening the HOPE solid within her. Till she couldn’t see it any longer.

I’ve formed callouses of my own. Nothing like a lifetime of anger and disappointment to thicken up that thin skin of yours. Can you relate?

Then I met my Savior. And I learned to trust that:

  • No matter what happens with others, He will always be there for me.
  • Regardless of what my reality is now, He has an awesome future all planned out.
  • Even if this world rejects me, He has a seat saved for me right by his side.
  • When it appears no one else loves me, He does – and that will never end.

We don’t need to hold on to our trust issues. Put your trust where it belongs: in an ever-loving, faithful, unchanging God –and He will turn your stony heart back into one of flesh and restore HOPE to your life.
